Overview

The Deaf & Hard of Hearing service provides information, and guidance to support access for persons with hearing loss. The service assists individuals, families, and professionals to connect with services and communicate more effectively.

 

Awareness sessions are also provided to teach basic Maltese sign language. Sessions are tailor made depending on the situation and particular needs of the service users.

 

Collaborations and co-production is carried out with other services from Aġenzija Sapport and other entities such as FITA, CRPD, and the Sign Language Interpreting Service.

 

Services are beneficial for:

  • Deaf and hard of hearing persons of all ages
  • Persons who experience hearing loss and may use hearing aids or cochlear implants
  • Families, schools, places of employment as well as other professionals

Tips on how to communicate better with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons

  • Wave your hand or gently tap their shoulder to get their attention

 

  • Face the person when you speak

 

  • Position yourself so your face is fully lit

 

  • Take breaks when talking

 

  • Speak at a normal pace and as clear as possible

 

  • If in a group, make sure you speak one at a time

 

  • Address the person, not the interpreter

 

  • Be patient and calm, and most of all, do not be afraid

 

  • Use facial expressions and body language
