A parent with an intellectual disability may require additional support to raise a child, however we believe that with the right support this can be achieved. This service aims to support parents in their parenting journey. We also understand that being a first time parent brings with it a lot of different emotions, uncertainties and challenges and therefore with the right training and support in place, parenting will not be out of reach to persons with intellectual disabilities.
AIM
Aġenzija Sapport aims to support these parents by offering them an individualised parenting programme by providing them with parenting skills training and actual hands-on experience. This will be done to offer an understanding to the prospective parent about the ADLs that are required to care for a new born and to promote a safe and healthy upbringing and environment for the child.
An individualised assessment is provided early in the service so that the parenting training will be given in accordance to their own particular needs and wishes.
The ‘Step by Step’ Parenting Programme by Prof. Maurice Feldman is utilised as the curriculum that guides the parenting training course. This is an evidence-based training programme specifically designed to be used with persons with intellectual disabilities.
