Sharing Lives has been hosting volunteering opportunities for two European volunteers each year through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) project since 2021.

Sharing Lives volunteers, through ESC, are involved in the implementation of various creative and fun initiatives within Sharing Lives. Moreover, they are given the space to create their own projects reflecting on their passions and interests.

QUALITY MARK

Through the Sharing Lives service, Aġenzija Sapport has been awarded a Quality Mark by The European Solidarity Corps, a European Union initiative that enables young people to show solidarity with communities in their respective country as well as abroad.

Through this award, more foreign volunteers will have the opportunity to join Sharing Lives as volunteers.

Projects created by ESC Volunteers

Inès Guillaume, France

During her ESC experience with Sharing Lives, Inès Guillaume from France, created a short video production entitled ‘WE CAN’ with Sharing Lives members. The project, which spanned over 7 months, involved drama lessons, the creation of an original song and filming the video at various locations around Malta. The aim of this project was to introduce film-making with persons with disability and give their abilities more visibility. Through this project both Inès and Sharing Lives members obtained valuable skills in drama, networking in the community, writing music and lyrics for a song, filming and video editing.

Lucia Ortiz De Urbina Garcia, Spain

Lucia Ortiz De Urbina Garcia, a volunteer from Spain utilised her creative talents by developing and leading an art programme for Sharing Lives members. This project resulted in the creation of a beautiful and colourful mural at one of Aġenzija Sapport’s premises.

Members of Sharing Lives practiced painting on various mediums, including canvas and rock art, until they collectively chose the main theme of the mural. Now, both staff and service users of Aġenzija Sapport can enjoy this artwork

Emilie Melcher, Germany

Cooking Circle was the project of Emilie Melcher from Germany. Her project taught members how to prepare and cook healthy and delicious meals. The sessions also acted as a social space where the members socialised and enjoyed their meals together. This project inspired local volunteers who continue to run the project on a bi-monthly basis and continues to develop as new ideas and activities are implemented.

Furthermore, Emilie with another ESC volunteer Diana Astola, from Spain, created an outdoor activity consisting of the creation of dreamcatchers together with some members. The dreamcatcher symbol has since become a symbol for Sharing Lives that even inspired other projects by the volunteers that followed.

Testimonials

ESC Volunteer
I was delighted to be able to volunteer for 7 months with the Sharing Lives Team at Aġenzija Sapport in Malta. Through this volunteering experience, I really enjoyed making myself useful by taking part in and creating new programmes and activities for persons with disabilities. I was able to improve my English and acquire new skills. During this voluntary work, one of the projects I created was a short film, “We Can”, with members of Sharing Lives where I had to film various scenes that show the potential of each member through singing, dancing, music, …

The aim is to promote inclusivity for persons with disabilities in the film industry and the audiovisual media, to provide experience in front of the camera, to build their self-confidence and, of course, to spend some quality time together in the community. I’m really proud of the members and the energy they brought to this project. I also had the pleasure of working with a member of Sharing Lives to create a song. I’m a pianist and I had the opportunity to find a melody on the piano for a song whose lyrics were written by a member. I was able to include a scene from this creation where we see her singing and myself playing the piano in the short feature that I directed. It was an enriching experience for me. Thank you Sharing Lives!

Thanks to them, I have been able to do things I had always wanted to do, and moreover, with wonderful people. With them, I felt very loved and supported. I have learned a lot, including how to enjoy the little things in life, and they carry a piece of my heart with them.
